Keynote title : Ars Panicalensis – Italian embroidery on net

Talk abstract: The keynote will start with an introduction of the Italian lace tradition, and particularly of embroidery on net in Panicale, in the Italian region of Umbria. Paola will speak about her journey learning the art of embroidery on net, and about the tradition and characteristics of Italian embroidery on net. The talk will also present the characteristics of her particular style of embroidery, her research and study of ancient stitches and their use on modern designs.

Bio: Paola Matteucci has trained at the European Institute of Design and worked for many years as a fashion designer. She learned the art of embroidery on net in Panicale (Perugia) from the master embroiderers of the city.

Paola’s work focuses on the promotion and conservation of hand embroidery on tulle. Paola collaborated with the Municipality of Panicale for the promotion of the tulle museum and of the municipal embroidery school.

Paola Mateucci teaches regular classes as well as intensive workshops in Panicale and in collaboration with associations and schools. She also teaches lace one-on-one.

In 2004, she edited the publication of the book “Ars Panicalensis” and contributed the chapter on basic technique.

In 2013, she published her own textbook “Embroidery on tulle – Ars Panicalensis. Beginner’s textbook”, and in 2020 she published a new textbook “Embroidery on tulle.  Background nets. Running stitch and darning stitch”.

In 2024, she obtained the prestigious recognition “Master of Art and Craft” from the Cologni Foundation, a special recognition dedicated to excellent Italian Masters of Art active in 23 categories of artistic craftsmanship.
