Talk Title: Threads of Belonging
Talk Abstract: This talk explores the transformative power of lace-making as a medium for connection and empowerment among women seeking asylum in Ireland. Drawing on her experience as a socially engaged textiles artist teaching Irish crochet lace to female asylum seekers in Dublin, Fiona reflects on how the craft becomes both a metaphorical and literal border, embodying resilience and crossing boundaries. Lace, often seen as a decorative edge, mirrors the precariousness and strength of lives lived at the margins. By weaving threads into intricate patterns, these women not only create something beautiful but also reclaim agency and build community. This presentation examines the intersection of art, activism, and belonging, showcasing the potential of creative practices to transcend borders and foster solidarity.
